(The deficit subsidy for
the Government Employees Pension reached 10
trillion won last year,
yet voices calling for
the reform of the
Government Employees Pension and Private School
Teachers Pension are not being heard in our society.
Based on the judgment that this
can no longer be left neglected,
starting today,
the Pension Future Forum
intends to take the lead on the issue
of Government Employees Pension reform.
It was only in mid-February 2014,
about a month after
the TV Chosun report,
that the Park Geun-hye administration
officially declared
that it would take on
Government Employees Pension
reform.
This was immediately after the presidential office
directly heard an explanation of the contents of the December
2013 JoongAng Ilbo Op-Ed,
"The Government Employees Pension: A 'Time Bomb.'")

The deficit of the Government Employees Pension is increasing significantly every year. This year, 2.4 trillion won must be filled with the nation's tax money, and it is said that this will swell to as much as 12 trillion won in 10 years. The Park Geun-hye administration also identifies the reform of the Government Employees Pension as a task that must be urgently resolved this year and plans to begin addressing it in earnest.
Reporter Kim Do-hyung reports.
[Report]
The deficit of the Government Employees Pension is projected to be 2.4 trillion won this year, 12 trillion won in 10 years, and more than 70 trillion won by 2070.
Due to insufficient pension income, 544,000 won of the public's taxes must be provided per person to 348,000 Government Employees Pension recipients.
This malformed Government Employees Pension is cited as a representative reform task of the Park Geun-hye administration, which has championed the "normalization of abnormality."

"Through reforms that normalize the abnormal practices prevalent in our society, I will create an economy with a strong foundation."
Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Hyun Oh-seok also stated during last year's National Assembly audit that he would "prepare a plan to improve the Government Employees Pension."
For 55 years since its introduction, reform of the Government Employees Pension has not been achieved due to extreme opposition from stakeholders such as the government employees' unions.
This contrasts with the National Pension, which cut its pension amount by 43% twenty years after the system's introduction.

"Due to population aging, the period for receiving pensions has increased by more than 20 years, but since the economically active population is decreasing rapidly, reform must be carried out quickly."
The Ministry of Security and Public Administration stated that it plans to establish the Government Employees Pension System Development Committee during the first half of the year to prepare an improvement plan.
