"Pension Reform Has Been Derailed by Vote Calculations and Politicians Who Want Larger Pensions for Themselves" (November 2022)

Pension experts and others at a public forum on the 3rd delivered sharp criticism of political figures who have abdicated their responsibility for National Pension reform over the past two decades or more.
Yoon Seok-myeong (age 61), Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHASA), speaking at a policy forum on "National Pension Reform That Resonates with the Younger Generation" hosted by the Sound Fiscal Forum at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated: "For the past 24 years, the reality has been that we have not been able to raise pension contributions by even 1 percentage point, yet we continue to repeat the irresponsible claim that 'as long as the state exists, pensions can be paid.'"
With regard to the repeated failure of National Pension reform, he remarked, "In addition to the extreme self-interest of caring only about whether our own generation fares well, there are many aspects in which politicians are conscious of elections and seek to avoid cuts to their own pensions," adding, "It appears that there is a strong desire to avoid reducing the pensions they themselves will receive, which is precisely what genuine reform would require."
