A Paper Showing That Changes in Household Structure Can Distort the Elderly Poverty Rate

(This is a paper by Kim Hak-ju, Secretary-General of the Pension Future Forum and Professor at Dongguk University.)

 

Using ten years of time-series data from the Survey of Household Finances, the study examined how changes in household structure distort relative poverty statistics, and found that

this is a paper confirming that an optical illusion in the poverty rate can arise from the mere shrinking of household size alone, even without any deterioration in the income distribution.

It is a highly meaningful paper showing that Korea's high elderly poverty rate can be measured in a distorted way, differing from reality, due to various factors.

Applying a research methodology, among others, capable of reflecting Korea's own realities and characteristics,

there is an urgent need to build social consensus on a proper method for measuring the elderly poverty rate!
