(Though one might feel this comes rather late,
it seems that a proper bill has finally been introduced!)
Representative Park Su-yeong of the People Power Party introduced the ‘National Debt Transparency Disclosure Act’ on the 20th, which discloses to the public what the true national debt actually is. Rep. Park also that day covered, within his bills, the ‘broad-measure national debt’ — the liabilities of the central government and public institutions plus public pension accrued liabilities —
known as D4, respectively sponsoring, that same day, a ‘Partial Amendment to the National Finance Act’ and a ‘Partial Amendment to the National Accounting Act’ that include provisions for the government to manage and publish this figure. According to figures compiled by Rep. Park Su-yeong’s office based on government data,
as of 2024, the broad-measure national debt (D4) was found to reach 4,632 trillion won.
This figure is derived by adding the National Pension’s unfunded liability (1,575 trillion won), the military pension’s accrued liability (267 trillion won), and the Government Employees Pension’s accrued liability (1,052 trillion won) to the 2024 ‘public-sector debt (D3)’ of 1,738 trillion won published by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
This approaches 90 million won per person.
