Pension Future Forum: "Let Us Discuss Reform Again in the 22nd National Assembly" (2024.05.13)

The Pension Future Forum, an academic organization, on the 13th urged, "Let us discuss the pension reform bill again in the 22nd National Assembly."

The Forum issued a position statement that day, stating this while explaining, "data analysis has confirmed that, if the current state of the National Pension is maintained, it will place an enormous burden on future generations while the system itself is bound to become unsustainable."

Addressing the Public Deliberation Committee as well, it stated, "despite the fact that the process of arriving at the final 'pay more, receive more' plan involved numerous improprieties,

not a single responsible figure at the Public Deliberation Committee has offered any answer," it criticized.

It went on to argue, "the final outcome, which cost several billion won in budget and was reached through the months-long participation of several hundred people, has had its legitimacy called into question because of improprieties in how the Public Deliberation Committee was run," and

"it must apologize to the citizen representatives," it said. It also said that the Committee should subsequently undergo expert verification of the problems related to its operation.

The Forum also stated, "if anyone wishes to debate the Pension Future Forum directly on the issues being raised, please set a time and place."

The Forum has raised problems concerning the composition of the agenda deliberation panel, the process of selecting the final two options, the process of selecting the 500-member citizen representative group from an initial pool of 10,000 people and the under-representation of the younger generation in that process, the bias in the learning materials provided to the citizen representatives and the omission of key content (including errors), and the inappropriateness of the survey questions, among other issues.
