(A while ago, the IMF expressed concern that, due to rapid population aging, if the current pension system is left unchanged, the national debt-to-GDP ratio would approach around 200% after 2050, and it mentioned the need for structural reform.
The answer given by the Republic of Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister for the Economy in the article below seems to be a non sequitur. That is because the country keeps increasing its national debt every year through expanded consumption-type spending.)
Moody’s also asked about mid- to long-term national debt management measures, to which Deputy Prime Minister Koo explained, “We will manage fiscal policy under a performance-centered strategic stance, restructuring spending in unnecessary areas while boldly investing in high-performing areas.”
