Pension Future Forum: "The Public Deliberation Committee Should Apologize to the Citizen Representatives — It Must Be Discussed Anew in the 22nd National Assembly" (News1, May 13, 2024)

The Pension Future Forum, an academic group focused on the pension system, stated on the 13th that it was calling on the Public Deliberation Committee under the National Assembly Special Committee on Pension Reform to apologize, and that pension reform must be newly discussed in the 22nd National Assembly.

In a position statement issued that day, the Forum said, "With the formation of the 22nd National Assembly, we hope National Pension reform will be discussed afresh on a new stage," and added, "We hope you will return to the original questions of what the problems with the National Pension are today and what the desirable direction for change is, and draw a new picture with the resolve to start from a blank page."

Earlier, the Forum had raised fiscal concerns about the citizen representatives' proposal and pointed out that the public deliberation survey had been conducted in a biased manner.

They pointed out, "It is because of improprieties in the operation of the Public Deliberation Committee, which was solely in charge of the entire process, that its legitimacy has come into question," adding, "The Public Deliberation Committee should apologize to the citizen representatives first."

They went on to say, "After first apologizing to the citizen representatives, the issues concerning the Public Deliberation Committee's operation being raised by the Pension Future Forum and the press should be verified by experts," and, "If they wish to debate the issues being raised directly with the Pension Future Forum, we ask that they set a time and place."

They stressed, "The very core of National Pension reform is dividing limited resources based on a level of equity that all members can accept, without tilting toward the interests of any particular group or generation," and, "If the income replacement rate is raised under the current circumstances, it is plain to see that our children, and their children's generation, who must live together for a long time within the one community that is the Republic of Korea, will be sacrificed."

They added, "This is work that envisions the future decades from now, so there is no need to rush. The public will wait patiently."
