Ruling and Opposition Parties Hold Secretaries' Meeting of the Special Committee on Pension Reform… Activities Expected to Resume Next Month (2026.07.15.)
The National Assembly Special Committee on Pension Reform (the Pension Committee) is expected to resume its activities next month.
The Committee's ruling- and opposition-party secretaries, Representative Oh Ki-hyung of the Democratic Party of Korea and Representative Ahn Sang-hoon of the People Power Party, met on the 15th at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, where they received a government briefing and discussed the schedule going forward.
The two sides agreed to convene a plenary session during August, and decided that they would first receive from the government a briefing on a pension reform plan encompassing the Basic Pension, the National Pension, retirement pensions, and private pensions.
The Special Committee on Pension Reform is a special committee whose term of activity is fixed through the end of the year, and it can operate separately from the stalled negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties on the composition of the Assembly.
At the meeting that day, four working-level officials from the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Planning and Budget, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare were in attendance and reported on the progress of pension reform.
At this meeting, Representative Ahn stated, "The pension reform plan that passed the National Assembly plenary session in March of last year merely postpones the point of depletion of the National Pension Fund by 15 years," and requested each ministry to "submit a government proposal that embodies a structure allowing the National Pension to endure for more than 70 years."
