The National Assembly Special Committee on Pension Reform is preparing to resume its activities next month.
The Committee intends to bring discussions on the structural reform of the National Pension back on track, drawing on the findings of expert consultations and the government's reform proposal. As the Committee has faced criticism for having remained effectively idle, attention is focused on whether the ruling and opposition parties can produce concrete results.
According to reporting compiled by the Herald Economy on the 15th, the chair of the Special Committee on Pension Reform, Representative Yoon Young-seok of the People Power Party, together with the ruling-party secretary, Representative Oh Ki-hyung of the Democratic Party of Korea, and the opposition secretary, Representative Ahn Sang-hoon of the People Power Party, will discuss pension reform measures this afternoon with relevant ministries including the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
One member of the Special Committee on Pension Reform emphasized, "We intend to press promptly for the government's measures, which are already overdue," adding, "The government must produce a plan that meets the income-security level jointly agreed upon by the ruling and opposition parties and that is fiscally sustainable." He continued, "Although the ruling and opposition parties have not yet concluded their negotiations on the composition of the Assembly, the Committee will operate separately and pick up the pace."
The Special Committee on Pension Reform plans to hold a plenary session as early as next month to conclude the work of the private advisory committee and to accelerate the preparation of related legislation. The anticipated sequence is that the Committee will receive a briefing on the structural reform plan the government is preparing and then enter negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties.
