Government Employees Pension Consuming 9 Trillion Won in Public Funds: Reform Sidelined Despite Snowballing Deficit (April 28, 2026)

According to the government's financial projection report, the deficit subsidy, estimated at 8.6 trillion won in 2025, is projected to grow to 23.8 trillion won by 2065.

The estimated cumulative deficit over the next 40 years stands at 637.7 trillion won; given that last year's deficit subsidy exceeded the provisional figure, the actual cumulative deficit is expected to be even larger.

Reform of the Government Employees Pension is urgently needed, yet the pension has been effectively excluded from the deliberations of the National Assembly's Special Committee on Pension Reform.
