It was reported on the 22nd that the Democratic Party of Korea is pursuing legislation to strengthen the application of the "stewardship code" to the management of the National Pension Fund. The stewardship code is a mechanism by which the government uses equity stakes held by public pension funds in private companies to steer those companies' management in a particular direction. The Democratic Party has adopted a policy of actively utilizing the stewardship code as part of the stock market revitalization policy being pursued by the Lee Jae-myung administration.
According to Chosun Biz reporting, the Democratic Party's KOSPI 5000 Special Committee has begun drafting an amendment to the National Pension Act that would incorporate compliance with the stewardship code as a criterion for selecting private asset management firms entrusted with National Pension funds. The bill is expected to be introduced in early March.
