(May 2015) There is a significant divergence between the opposition party and the government over the contribution rate that would be required if the National Pension's income replacement rate were raised from the current 40% to 50%. The dispute centers on whether the increase would amount to 1 percentage point or a doubling of contributions—a very substantial difference. Today (the 5th), the two sides exchanged rebuttal materials and waged a war of words outside the formal negotiations. We will now connect with a critic who characterizes the Ministry of Health and Welfare's claim that contributions would have to double as a form of fear-mongering. Professor Kim Yeon-myung of Chung-Ang University, who has served as co-chair of the civil-service pension reform working group on the recommendation of the opposition party, is on the line. As he is currently in Jeju, we connected through the Jeju bureau.
