(It appears that the executive leadership of the National Pension Service (NPS) does not properly understand the automatic adjustment mechanism.

On a previous occasion, the NPS Chairperson criticized the automatic adjustment mechanism,

and today the Planning Director is criticizing it as well.

In response to the continued mischaracterization of the automatic adjustment mechanism by the NPS executive leadership, the Pension Future Forum will rebut these claims through the Canadian case study that the NPS leadership frequently cites.

It also lacks soundness. The topic at issue is the automatic adjustment mechanism. The automatic adjustment mechanism erodes the real value of pension benefits. If it is to be introduced at all, logic would dictate that the Government Employees Pension—which, due to fund depletion, receives annual deficit subsidies of 10 trillion won drawn from taxpayers' money—should be reformed first; yet the discussion only ever concerns applying it to the National Pension.

Moreover, the proposal to restructure benefits on a "you-get-what-you-paid-in…" basis for the sake of the younger generation comes close to distorting the facts. Such a change would, in effect, protect the pensions of the older generation while reducing only those of younger cohorts.
