(Pension Future Forum Statement on the 181 Trillion Won Drop in National Pension Reserves) Groups That Led the Agitation All This Time Must State Their Position!

In the aftermath of the KOSPI index’s
sharp fall last July,
the National Pension’s reserves
shrank in a single month
by as much as 181 trillion won.
Depending on market conditions,
the size of the National Pension reserves
will change; that in itself
is not something the Pension Future Forum takes serious issue with.
That is because, for the sake of the pension system’s sustainability,
we have long stressed the need for
structural reform that brings contributions and benefits
into balance.
The problem is that since April of last year,
when a debate on structural reform was urgently needed,
those who have claimed that if the National Pension Fund were only managed well
every problem could
be solved, stirring people up all the while—
the Chairman of the National Pension Service,
KBS TV,
and various other media outlets—
are conspicuously
silent about this steep drop in the National Pension
reserves.
It is this silence,
this reality,
that we are calling into question, nothing more.
Even though in a single month the National Pension reserves
lost roughly 200 trillion won,
those who have all along claimed that managing the National Pension Fund
well
would solve everything,
making a great fuss about it—
all those experts, groups,
and media outlets—
must at the very least
state their position!
This is what the Pension Future Forum
publicly demands.
(Attached is the October 4
editorial from the Financial News.
With reference to it,
we demand that they state their position.)
